It’s hot out there, but that doesn’t mean you can’t dazzle in the sunshine with tan-intensifying makeup that won’t melt, slide or fade. Here are your rules to great make-up during warmer months…
Oil-Free Foundation. The number one rule for summer makeup? Switch your foundation to a non-slip, water-resistant formula. Foundation is mainly made up of oil, silicon, pigments and powder, so most will slip off your skin in the heat, but a water-based formula will have more staying power while letting skin breathe. Shiseido Synchro Skin Glow Luminising Fluid Foundation is light, evens out skin tone and withstands heat and humidity, while Laura Mercier’s SPF20 Tinted Moisturiser is oil-free so won’t give that greasy ‘glow’.
Smudge-Free Eyes.Use a water-based concealer as a primer, then smudge a regular black pencil with your finger and set with a matte black eyeshadow pressed on top. Giorgio Armani Waterproof Silk Eye Pencil is perfect. You can also try a hardwearing cream gel shadow like Chanel Ombre Premiere Creme Eyeshadow in Obscur. If you have a favourite eye shadow which isn’t water-proof, a layer of Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion applied to lids will stop it from falling under your eyes. Curl your lashes and opt for a waterproof mascara - Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils Waterproof won’t budge.
Long-Lasting Lipstick.Zingy orange or pack-a-punch pink enhances a tan and matte textures will help the colour pop. Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Lost Cherry is a neon coral with a long-wear formula that suits everyone. For more of a stain, By Terry Tint to Lip in Beach Game won’t move without taking to it with an oil-based cleanser. MAC Lipstick Chromat in Augmented Reality is a high-impact candy red colour, and the waxy texture acts as a repellent against the water keeping the protective pigment on your lips after laps in the pool. Gloss lovers should try the Dior Rouge Dior Brilliant range; the shade Victoire is a soft tangerine with a stay-put formula that isn't too shiny, sticky or tacky.
Budge-Free Blush.Waterproof blusher is hard to come by, which is why we love Nars Orgasm Liquid Blush; the liquid formula is sweat-proof. One word of advice: blend, as it initially looks quite opaque because the cream is heavily pigmented, so the best way to apply it is to tap a small amount on with your fingers and go over it with a makeup sponge to sheer it out. Powder blushers are best avoided as they will will turn patchy.
