The tips that’ll take your fitness up a notch

What do supermodels Lara Stone, David Gandy and actress Emilia Clarke have in common? They’ve all been reshaped by the Australian founder of Bodyism, James Duigan. Duigan’s gym on super-swanky Westbourne Grove has long been a hub of A-listers and fitness fans, who sweat it out on the two exercise floors and then hit the cafe for a helping of healthy, lean proteins. Duigan’s food mantra (as laid out in his bestselling Clean and Lean Diet, £19.95 [published by Kyle Books]) is sustainable and fun: just eat food that’ll nourish you and, should you want to lose fat, cut out bad carbs/processed foods and up the organic quota of your food.

Here are some stellar body tips from the main man:

Set realistic and safe goals. Once you’ve done this, allow yourself plenty of time to achieve them. I advise against pushing yourself too hard - while it may be tempting to spend hours slogging it out on the treadmill, doing so puts a huge strain on the body and isn’t as effective as you think - exercising too much can raise cortisol levels and dump fat on the stomach.

Try short, sharp shocks of exercise. This way, you’ll get all the benefits of aerobic exercise without raising your cortisol.

Move every day. Our bodies are designed to move. Again, this doesn’t have to be strenuous, but it should be varied - try yoga, a brisk walk or dancing. The ancillary benefit is that they all work out the whole body, which is key to looking and feeling your best.

Don’t stress. I know it’s easier said than done, but minimising stress and focusing in your mind on any transformations you’d like to happen in your body will make a real difference. You deserve a happy, healthy life - without believing that, you’ll sabotage yourself and any changes either won’t happen or they won’t last. The minute you change the mind-set it becomes so easy.

Get proper sleep. A good night’s sleep will reduce your stress levels, make you fitter during the day, and make you a nicer person in general.

Be kind to yourself. Confidence shows in your posture and body language, so accepting yourself and being positive about your body will definitely show to others and make you feel great on the inside too.
