How To Detox Your Skincare Regime
As a product junkie and someone lucky enough to have access to endless beauty products, there are times when it all gets a bit much: my normally minimal home aesthetic is challenged as shelves groan under pots, and bottles fight my toothbrush for space at the sink. At times like this I’m not just gathering dust, but piling too much onto my skin as well. Here’s how I streamline my regime.
What to axe…
Too tired to tone
Expert opinion is divided on the necessity of toner and though I might, for example, use one containing salicylic acid when suffering a breakout, I feel I can definitely do without on a regular basis.
Superfluous scrubbing? Exfoliating my face and body before bed feels like I’m slaying away the day. In fact doing so twice weekly is sufficient to keep skin cells turning over, and over-doing it can actually irritate and inflame. Time to cut back.
Bye-bye beauty sprays. When life gets stressful I use facial sprays. Find them in my kitchen, handbag and more abundant than biros on my desk. In reality they do little for my skin and far less than some choice breathing exercises will do for my state of mind.
Masking the issue. Back to the tub where slathering on a detoxing clay mask is another end of day ritual. I’m not sure why as I don't currently have spots and suspect it’s drying out already sore, wintry skin. Must donate to a friend in need...
Rich pickings. As a person with thirsty skin and a penchant for pampering I have stacks of rich, sweet-scented creams that I massage into my skin. It’s an enjoyable habit but one that I suspect spurs my occasional breakouts.
What to save…
Keep it clean. I cleanse once in the morning and twice at night to keep my skin clean and clear. Sisley Creamy Mousse Cleanser and Makeup Remover quickly sweeps away even long wear makeup while leaving skin hydrated and fresh.
SPF super. When you study skin damage as much as a beauty editor, it’s impossible to forget a daily SPF. Chanel UV Essentiel Multi Protection Sunscreen SPF50 and La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Ultra-Light Fluid SPF 50+ sit pretty under makeup.
Like magic. When skin is well hydrated makeup glides on and lasts better too. I give myself a two-minute massage with Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream every morning. Its unique blend of peptides, floral extracts and hyaluronic acid flood skin with moisture.
Sleep well. On hitting thirty I started using Skinceuticals Retinol 0.3 refining Night Treatment. It keeps skin cell turnover going to help reduce the onset of wrinkles, fine lines and dark spots. Begin using it once weekly, building it up to twice and finally nightly if desired.
Easily irritated? Hormones and diet don't seem to affect my complexion, but the minute I’m stressed my face becomes sore, red and rashy. Designed to renew delicate, traumatised skin Crème de La Mer instantly soothes and reduces redness.
