Q&A With Makeup Artist

After 10 years of experience as a national makeup artist, let’s just say Lauren knows a thing or two when it comes to making you look and feel your best. Having been a backstage makeup artist at London Fashion Week and top of her game when it comes to all types of manicure, Lauren has all the answers for all things beauty.

1. Hey Lauren, let’s start with the prep - what’s your own skincare routine like?
To be honest, my daily skincare is pretty simple. I use a gentle daily cleanser in the shower (at the minute that's Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm) followed by Chanel's Le lift eye cream and an SPF. I never sleep in my makeup but it’s good to know that wipes can block pores and dry out your skin so I much prefer using L’Oréal water. It easily removes all of my makeup (including mascara) and doesn't leave any residue either. I always finish my evening skincare routine with Chanel Hydra Beauty Crème mask as a night cream. Its smells amazing and makes my skin feel totally refreshed by morning.

2. And your favourite beauty makeup looks for summer?
This summer it’s all about radiant, glowing skin. Freckles were big last summer and I think that will continue. From the runway, it’s been floral tones; reds, oranges, pinks, peaches and corals washed over the eyes. This is particularly flattering on blue and green eyes and natural brushed-up brows complete this look. Festival makeup is set to be big this year! Glitter, glitter and more glitter! Body glitter with gemstones and holographic stickers as well as glitter lips all inspired by the amazing Pat McGrath and her latest products.

3. Pat McGrath as inspiration, we’re totally with you. How else do you find beauty inspiration?
I find beauty inspiration everywhere. Instagram is a great way to find new trends and products and I always keep an eye on runway makeup looks to see if there are similarities between shows that could spike a new trend or forecast colours and combinations for the season ahead. I even find women on my commute inspiring. It all depends what area of London you are in, there’s always a different vibe, colour palette and trend to take on. I suppose it’s one of the many things that makes London so unique.

4. The easiest way to go from a day to a night makeup look?
Taking makeup from day to night depends on what you like to make your focus. For example, a bold lip can look amazing and create a more glamorous look instantly (just make sure you fill your lips in with liner and keep it sharp to make this pop!). If eyes are more your thing then a pencil eye liner is the way forward - it’s easy to use, smudge and create different looks on eyes. Play with coloured liners to go with your eye shade (a purple liner with green eyes, navy liner with brown eyes and copper/brown liner with blue eyes works best). These tones create a softer look to black but still makes your eyes pop! Also, an extra pop of more blush is never a bad idea for a more glamorous evening look.

5. Be honest with us, how much makeup, is too much makeup?
Makeup is a very personal choice. In my opinion - as long as my client feels more confident and comfortable then who am I to judge? If you feel amazing with barely any makeup on then that’s great! If you like every inch of your face contoured, highlighted and powdered to help you face the world then fabulous! I'm here to help either way.

6. The question on everyone’s lips: how do you find the right lipstick colour for your skin tone?
Finding the right lipstick can be tricky. A good way to try and make things easier is to find out the tone of your skin. Hold up a pink lipstick and an orange lipstick to your face in the mirror, if you’re more drawn to the orange, then you're probably a warm skin tone, the pink- a cool skin tone. Every colour has a warm and cool tone so always ask an advisor to help you find the right tone of whichever colour you prefer to wear!

7. What’s the one beauty product you can’t live without?
It has to be Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream. It’s a multifunctional master piece; a lip balm, moisturiser, cuticle cream, skin gloss and treatment. It’s a cult classic and I recommend it to all my clients for different things (it also now comes fragrance free which is a bonus!).
