Beauty journalist and body expert Kate Shapland shares her top tricks to help you feel comfortable baring your legs this summer…
1. EAT THREE MEALS A DAY
Cellulite LOVES being starved: truly, if you miss meals you will only make cellulite worse. And definitely don't skip breakfast - you need to get your system going: make a porridge with two tablespoons of oat bran and some skimmed milk in the microwave - it works like magic to boost a sluggish system and reduce the fluid retention that contributes to cellulite.
2. UNCROSS YOUR LEGS
The key to great legs is good circulation and lymph flow. Crossing your legs impedes both - as does sitting on the edge of your seat.
3. EXERCISE REGULARLY
You need a balanced metabolism to steady burn off fat and maintain the lymph - lymph only moves when you move, so if you have a slow lymph, being more active and using a deep drainage cream like Legology Air-Lite Daily Lift For Legs will benefit them greatly.
4. QUIT SMOKING
It constricts blood flow, further reducing your circulation and contributing to cellulite. If you can’t quit, smoke roll ups - the tobacco is less riddled with toxic chemicals.
5. DRINK THE RIGHT WATER
Water intake is good, but switch to bottled water with a low dry residue content. Dry residue is the description for unidentified elements in the water, so a high percentage of dry residue means you could be overloading on toxins. Spa water has the lowest dry residue of all bottled waters.
6. REDUCE SALT & STARCH
Salty processed/refined food, salt and starch (bread, pasta) encourage the body to cling on to fluid, which can make cellulite worse.
7. GET YOUR HORMONES BALANCED
Oestrogen is thought to be the key hormone that initiates and promotes cellulite. Other hormones, including insulin, the catecholamines adrenaline and noradrenaline, thyroid hormones and prolactin, are all believed to participate in its development too.
8. LAY OFF CHEESE
Women who eat a high fat diet, full of milk, cheese and butter, tend to have worse cellulite than women who eat a macrobiotic diet: that's why Dutch and German women, who tend to eat a high fat diet, have more cellulite than Japanese and Chinese women who eat food sourced close to the ground.
Tension doesn't just send your shoulders up around your ears, but makes your whole body seize up, reducing the free flow of circulation which contributes to cellulite build up. Stress also causes an increase in the level of the catecholamine hormones.
10. IMPROVE THE FLOW
Leg contouring is all about flow, not fat. This is especially true for congested areas which are best targeted by reducing the fluid around the fat cells and increasing circulation and lymph flow. The killer combo is negative pressure technique, applied with a rubber suction cup, and diuretic oil. Apply the oil first - Cellu-Lite Salon Secret For Legs was made for purpose, then use Circu-Lite Squeeze Therapy For Legs - a suction cup - to give the pressure and ramp up the draining benefits of the oil.
11. BODY BRUSH
Just a couple of minutes of dry-brushing a day before your bath/shower, will stimulate your lymph, helping your body metabolise toxins more efficiently, discourage fluid retention and cellulite, and soften and tone your skin. Just do a few brisk strokes over your legs while the water heats up - it takes two minutes max! Do it in the shower if it’s quicker - you can brush wet or dry skin, it doesn’t really matter - the main thing is to remember not to scrub your skin with the brush but to instead maintain steady, long, swift strokes of the bristles. Your skin will become pink because fresh, nutrient-rich blood has been brought to the surface giving it a healthy bloom and tone.
