There are so many things we love about summer holidays, from poolside cocktails in floaty kaftans to beach parties sporting sun-kissed skin. Things we loathe when hitting warmer climates? Dry skin courtesy of blustery beach winds, burns after lying under the scorching sun for a bit too long, and frizzy hair (thanks, humidity). Thankfully it’s easy to ward off all the cons if you pack like a pro. That’s where we come in with this list of 15 holiday essentials:
Plane Necessities. Before you even hit the beach, your skin’s being robbed of moisture - yep, the plane air is about as dehydrating as it gets. To ward off dryness, keep your (cleansed - wipes will do if need be) skin topped up with moisture with a frequent spritzing of Avene’s pocket-sized Thermal Spray, then lock in it in with a barrier cream like Weleda Skin Food.
Comfort on the plane is key! Especially, if you’re going long haul, so dress in comfortable clothes and keep a lightweight shawl in your tote to ward off the plane chills (and also to serve as an extra layer during transfers/on chilly evenings). If you’re planning on getting some shut-eye during the flight, pack a cashmere or silk eye mask - get a Holistic Silk number to block out all light and leave your hair kink-free.
Beach Bag Must-Haves. First and foremost: SPF. Up your game on this front with a Sisley SPF 50 to ward off pigmentation and wrinkle-forming rays while also hiding imperfections, infusing the skin with nutrition and adding a little warmth to the complexion. On your body, try Institut Esthederm or La Roche Posay - both are effective and skin-friendly brands. Physical protection is also key - protect your eyes with sunnies (large Ray-Bans will block out 99-100% of damage), and shield your face as much as possible with a visor or covetable logo-adorned cap, which is handily also your ticket to instant cool.
Hair also needs support when under attack from sea water, chlorine and sun- especially if you want to channel sun goddess rather than scarecrow. Apply a layer of SHOW Beauty’s Pure Treatment Oil before you head to the beach for an Argan oil hit that’ll leave your hair frizz-free and smooth. If you’re all about surfer girl locks, spritz a little Premiere Working Texture Spray through the ends to add a little extra movement and form to the ends.
This may not be the most glamorous of recommendations, but we’d really recommend switching to a mild, natural deodorant when on holiday. Bank on Weleda Wild Rose Deodorant to stay fresh all day no matter how hot and bothered you get.
Hotel Pamper Kit. Use the opportunity when you’re back in your room between the beach and bar to pamper your hair and skin to avoid either becoming parched. Here’s the ultimate kit to restore both:
For Dehydration…Sun, sea, sand and beach wind play havoc with the hydration levels of your skin. For perfectly dewy, nourished skin, apply a dollop of La Prairie’s Caviar Luxe Sheer.
For Breakouts…Sadly, the numerous layers of sunscreen and the elements can leave skin a little less than clear. Pack a purifying and barrier-restoring toner like Clarins Gentle Exfoliator Brightening Toner to remove oil and makeup and reduce shine.
To Calm Body Skin… Don’t forget to pack a refreshing gel like Decleor Body Gel to cool your skin down after a cool shower. Take time to work it into skin if you can to really benefit from the zinginess of the gel.
For Thirsty Hair…Try a post-wash conditioning treatment in the form of Riche Leave-In Conditioner. Work a little into mid-lengths and ends and let it absorb before shampooing.
Sunset Cocktail Makeup. Start with base, but leave heavy foundations at home and plump with a skin-perfecting primer instead like Becca Backlight Primer, which blurs imperfections and gives a radiant glow - aka the selfie-perfect complexion. Add tinted moisturiser/an alphabet cream/concealer only where needed.
Next, arm yourself with a bronzer and blushto take you from beach to bar in an instant. Nars Multiple sticks in Bronze and Orgasm give you the ultimate holiday accessory in the form of a radiant glow. Just swipe, blend and glow…
Don’t forget highlighter!Charlotte Tilbury's Bar of Gold is the crème de la crème of highlighters and is sure to add the perfect subtle shimmer. For a liquid version MAC Strobe Cream is lightweight and sits perfectly on top of sun-kissed skin, making your complexion look nourished, rather than caked.
Before you head out, apply a nourishing lip balm - cracked, sunburnt lips are not a good look - with a little SPF to ward off damage from any remaining rays (try By Terry's Baume de Rose SPF 15, which is wonderfully nourishing), and add a few flicks of mascara - Lancome Hypnose Waterproof Mascara is always a good shout and doubles up as a daytime mascara if you want to wear one to sunbathe in.
