Follow this expert guide to applying the perfect velvety base, and making it last all day long

When choosing foundation, my criterion is simple - it needs to give me a dewy, youthful finish, not look mask-like, and last the whole day. My daily routine is filled with many meetings around the city and photo shoots, so my biggest priority is for my makeup to stay put. I’m obsessed with foundation and have tried every brand, and here are my favourite base products and my secret technique tricks so that no one will ever know you're wearing it.
Never skip primer.
One of the biggest benefits of primer is that it can really reduce the appearance of your pores, making your make-up look much smoother. I recommend Pixi by Petra Flawless and Powerless Primer as a perfect way to begin your foundation routine. When you apply this primer, the glow comes right through your foundation and it looks like you’ve highlighted your face in all the areas where light hits it.
When it comes to my foundation, I look for a liquid formula with high coverage which doesn't compromise on glow.
My all-time favourite is by Stila Aqua Glow Serum Foundation. Thanks to its weightless texture, it applies and blends extremely easily improving the skin’s appearance by smoothing fine lines, blurring imperfections, and lending my skin that dewy looking make up. I always apply it with a damp blending sponge. For a lighter touch, cushion-based compacts create a sheer, weightless glowing veil with a velvety finish. I recommend Lancome Miracle Cushion.
Pick the right shade.
Foundation is one of those beauty items that you should always try before buying. I apply a stroke of up to three colours on my jawline and check if it blends with my neck in natural light. Nowadays, pretty much every department store counter will match you to your perfect foundation shade for free.
Next step is highlighter.
I use Topshop Chameleon Highlighter in Mother of Pearl. It’s a gorgeous, warm-toned gold highlighter that reflects a slight pink sheen in the light and complements all skin tones perfectly. The formula is super-soft and creamy, making it easy to work with when applying to the cheekbones with fingers.
To add the finishing touch, apply a setting spray.
Translucent powders can make my skin look dry and caked. One spritz will ensure your makeup lasts all day and will also help the whole makeup look blend into the skin effortlessly creating an even more natural-looking finish. My choice is Cover FX Illuminating Setting Spray that offers an airbrushed finish whilst giving makeup at least 12 hours staying power.
Remove oil throughout the day.
If I get shiny patches later in the day, I dab on Dermalogica Oil Free Matte Drops, which absorbs the excess oils and gives me matte finish.
